Mid-Century Furniture

Mid-century furniture brings together sculptural form, thoughtful proportions and everyday comfort. Known for its clean lines and inventive use of materials, the period produced furniture with a distinctive character that continues to complement contemporary interiors. From an elegantly shaped armchair to a striking mirrored console, these pieces offer practical design with a strong decorative presence.

At Markies Antiques, our mid-century furniture collection reflects the variety of twentieth-century European design, with a particular emphasis on Italian seating. Upholstered armchairs, lounge chairs and sofas sit alongside individual statement pieces, offering opportunities to furnish a room around a single design or introduce a different character to an existing interior.

Our collection includes designs by Marco Zanuso, Gigi Radice and Osvaldo Borsani, with pieces ranging from Zanuso’s distinctive Lady Chairs to a sofa designed by Radice for Minotti and an Italian mirrored console by Borsani. These pieces illustrate the breadth of Italian furniture design, combining expressive shapes with careful attention to proportion, materials and detail.

Seating is central to the appeal of mid-century interiors. Generous curves, gently angled backs and carefully considered frames give chairs and sofas a welcoming appearance while allowing them to stand confidently within a room. A pair of Italian armchairs can create an inviting seating area, while an individual lounge chair provides a focal point in a sitting room, study or bedroom.

The collection also reflects the quieter elegance of Scandinavian design, represented by examples such as Hans Wegner’s CH-23 dining chairs. Their balanced proportions offer a different expression of the same interest in furniture that is both attractive and useful, demonstrating how varied mid-century design can be.

One of the enduring strengths of mid-century furniture is its versatility. Sculptural upholstery can soften a modern architectural space, while a mirrored console introduces light and decorative detail. These designs also sit comfortably alongside antique furniture, paintings and sculpture, allowing interiors to develop naturally through a mixture of periods and materials.

Whether you are looking for a distinctive pair of chairs, a beautifully proportioned sofa or an individual piece by a recognised designer, explore our mid-century furniture collection to discover designs with lasting character.
