Beryl Cook was born in Surrey in 1926 and grew up to work as a touring showgirl in London. She never received formal training but taught herself to paint after moving to Southern Rhodesia in the 1950s. Upon returning to the UK, she moved to Plymouth, where she managed a busy seaside boarding house and painted the eccentric characters she observed in local pubs and drag shows. Her first breakthrough solo exhibition in 1975 quickly turned her into a beloved public figure, celebrated for her humorous art style. She was awarded an O.B.E. in 1995 for her contributions to British art and passed away in Plymouth in 2008.
