An early 20th century impressionist 'en plein air' oil on canvas painting depicting the Neriad Fountain in the northern parterre of the palace of Versailles on an Autumnal afternoon. Signed L F to lower left.

Paul Léon Frequenez (1876-1947) was a prominent French landscape painter, watercolourist, and engraver. He achieved widespread acclaim in the early - mid 20th century for his romantic, light-filled depictions of French public gardens and idyllic regional landscapes. His technique blended Academic training with late impressionist sensibilites. 

Frequenez’s career reached its zenith during the 1920s. He regular won prestigious accolades at the Paris Salon exhibitions:
  • 1914: Received an Honorable Mention.
  • 1920: Awarded the Prix Raigecourt-Goyon.
  • 1921 & 1922: Secured Bronze and Silver medals respectively.
  • 1924: Won the coveted Salon Gold Medal for his painting Sur le Vieil Escalier, au Matin (On the Old Staircase, Morning).
Major French public institutions permanently hold select pieces of his oeuvre:
  • Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon: Houses Fontaine à Vaison, Le Bassin de Neptune à Versailles, Le Miroir, and Parc de Versailles, le char embourbé.
  • The Historic Center for National Archives (Paris): Maintains documentation and official records of his cultural output.
